Heroines of the American Revolution

The American Revolution is the product of a collective struggle. Although it is mostly seen as a victory won by men by fighting, women's role in this struggle is just as important and effective. Women are the hidden heroines of this revolution. The apparent effects of the increase in taxes have affected women's daily and family lives. Women's organizations such as the Daughters of Liberty and Ladies of Philadelphia begin to form and support this revolution. Through these organizations, women try to help the soldiers fighting at the front by collecting money and food. In addition, there are also women who fight in the front by dressing like men and help by spying. Women, like Molly Pitcher, who secretly joins the military are an indication that the revolution is for both sexes. Women, from the oldest to the youngest who fight for their rights with all kinds of force have become symbols. With their boycott of British products, voluntary nursing, and support, they are the heroines of this revolution.

CHARLES DICKENS’ GREAT EXPECTATIONS: A REFLECTION OF THE VICTORIAN ERA’S SOCIAL DYNAMICS

Great Expectations is considered one of the most outstanding works of Charles Dickens. The novel takes place in Victorian era Britain and it is, therefore functions as a medium to mirror the social dynamics of this respected era including class-divided social hierarchy, social mobility, and the concept of morality which manifest themselves more explicitly with the effects of the industrial revolution. Through its main character and protagonist Pip, the reader witnesses the course towards the ‘myth’ of upward mobility. In this regard, the present paper aims to foreground the dynamics of Victorian society that are reflected in the novel.

An Analysis of Women’s Position in Books from Female Writers’ Perspective in Victorian Era:

In the Victorian era, people were greatly impressed by the impact of separation of spheres and classes on their lives. This effect was at the centre of the struggle for existence of women in society through gender differences. Women were imprisoned in private sphere and were forced to spend their lives in a restricted way away from social life. On the other hand, women who tried to be in male-dominated areas faced difficulties. In Victorian England, female writers used pseudonyms to survive. In their books, which they could publish in hiding in this way, they dealt with women from different angles by addressing the issue of women, and they revealed the position of women in Victorian Era. In this paper, it will be explained how Victorian women writers such as Jane Austen, Emily Brontë, and Mary Wollstonecraft dealt with the roles of women in society and how they criticized the patriarchal social order of Victorian England.

A Tale of Constructions

Over the past fifty years, linguistics has seen various approaches to grammar. Starting with Noam Chomsky (1957, 2014), linguists assumed that grammar was generated based on a set of rules, universally and innately integrated in humans’ minds. For years, this framework has been the main approach for many linguists to apply to languages, including Turkish. Nowadays, with Adele Goldberg (1995, 2006, 2019), Construction Grammar (CXG) is introduced to the linguistic landscape of syntax. Both approaches intersect at trying to “capture the creative nature of languages” (Goldberg, 2019). Being a relatively new framework, most work has been done in the English language. Turkish, on the other hand, has not been studied within the CXG framework to the researcher’s knowledge. Therefore, this paper is a short illustration of how Turkish linguists can utilize CXG by introducing and exemplifying the intensifier construction (IntCx) and the unevidential construction (UneCx).
